Hey There, Welcome To My Site
I'm glad you dropped by. I write a mix of horror and fantasy with a focus on complex relationships, cosmic horror, and human resilience. I especially love those works which exist on the outskirts. Those electrifying cult classics which slip narrowly between our well laid brickwork of genre and form.
My name's Nick Satnik by the way.
I've been writing for a long time but would consider 2023 my first year of treating writing like a part-time job, though it's still a volunteer position more often than not.
I started off writing fantasy novels in the summer just for fun, because reading fantasy was almost all I did in middle and high-school. I finished several manuscripts, but was never really satisfied with them. In college, however, I discovered the wonderful world of short-horror through Brian Evenson's fantastic collection: Song for the Unravelling of the World.
I was hooked. A fish drawn out of water and into some odd, new, gelatinous medium more wonderous than air.
So then I did that. A lot. My capstone project at college resulted in me writing 41 horror short stories, essays, and poems in the course of six months. Which was... a lot. I got some stories published into magazines and now I'm working to get more out there but I want to do more than publish short stories because.. well... let us be frank.
Who the hell reads short stories?
A more precise question might be:
who the hell reads literary journals? Except for college professors and the very same writers who are seeking publication inside them.
And please don't be offended, I just want to be honest. At the very least, I don't know a singular person who has-ever or will-ever go to a literary journal of short fiction for pleasure. These people exist I am sure, and I am grateful to them, but I've never met one and honestly? I'm not one of them myself. I'd much rather continue reading the entire bibliography of H.P. Lovecraft or the whole of Sherlock Holmes. (Both of which are in the public domain, and entirely free online by the way, would recommend.)
This realization drives the secondary prong of my work, which is the experimentation with the many new mediums presented by the information age.
Live readings at coffee shops? Why not livestreamed readings on YouTube or Twitch?
A collection of poetry? Why not online Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style poetry which the reader can interact with?
Publishing a short story in print? Why not a dramatic reading on YouTube or a podcast site?
Writing a cosmic horror mystery novel? What if it was an interactive game instead, or as well?
As much as I want to write short stories and novels and publish them traditionally in the traditional way for the traditional audience, I also want to use my writing career to revitalize our traditions of storytelling and written narrative entertainment in an age where literary magazines and even novels have fallen somewhat by the wayside.
So... That's what I'm about. If you read, or otherwise consume any of the work I create here I sincerely hope you enjoy it. This website will function as a hub for all of my work. On it you should be able to find, one way or another, any and everything I ever create.
Happy Reading & Have A Good One,
- Nick Satnik
Things (Media) I Love
My top influences, inspirations, recommendations. I consume a lot of art, but everything I do would not have been possible without first reading, viewing, playing, etc, these... thingies. If I ever suffer retrograde amnesia, give me some of these. Experiencing them again for the first time might make the memory loss worth it.
Is this list too long for its own good? Yes.
Will I change that? No.
Enjoy!
